Wiley Oliver came into rescue under very special circumstances. This young boy comes from a fly-in community out near God's Lake. Dogs in this remote area have many odds against them with high numbers of stray dogs and routine dog shooting for both population control and sport. Wiley Oliver fell victim to a really awful ordeal. He was literally set on fire by some cruel kids in a school yard, simply for their entertainment. His neck and shoulders were badly burned. Wiley Oliver was taken in by a couple teaching in the community, who orchestrated his arrival with us. With no proper medical care in this very remote community, Wiley Oliver was first rescued towards the end of May, and was only able to get to Brandon (and a proper vet) when he arrived. In the last month, his wounds from the burn have healed up nicely. The stress and severity of the situation caused Wiley Oliver's immune system to crash. All dogs carry mites on their body which have no impact on them because of their natural immune system. In Wiley Oliver's case, severe stress caused a crash in his immune system, and he is unable to fight these mites - resulting them taking over and causing a type of mange known as demodectic mange. This type of mange is not contageous to other dogs, cats or humans! Wiley Oliver started his first treatment at the end of June and only a month later he went to the vet for a re-check and was found to be clear of mites! In August his coat has almost fully recovered - he has a couple spots left on his hind legs where he is waiting for his hair to grow back in - but Wiley Oliver is a now happy and healthy boy!
The kind folks who took Wiley Oliver in named him Oliver, and had Wiley tacked on by them later because his rough appearance made him look like Wile E. Coyote. (We often refer to him as Wiley.) Wiley is in a foster home and has proven to be one wonderful guy - his temperment hasn't been harmed one little bit! He is the first one to greet people when they come into his foster home and is the most social, friendly dog you've ever met! Wiley is a very happy guy - he loves to play and is happiest when he has another dog around to bounce around with. We would prefer a home with another dog for his fella, as he just adores other dogs. Wiley Oliver is great with cats - his foster mom has several and he doesn't bother with them at all. This young boy has great manners, and is housebroken and does fine left loose in the house. Wiley Oliver is the most lovable dog - he has a very friendly and happy personality - and despite everything he has been through, he adores all people, big and small. Wiley is trustworthy with kids of all ages, and is an all around very happy guy!
