NOVEMBER 18 - 20TH, 2016 - TIKI'S TRAVELS TO YAMNUSKA WOLFDOG SANCTUARY
Tiki arrived into rescue at the age of six months, dropped off at a local pound with her siblings. Funds for Furry Friends took her and her brother, Totem, into our care, while the Brandon Humane Society was able to rescue the other three. Tiki’s siblings all found homes shortly afterwards but Tiki remained. She developed elusive behaviours and a mistrust of strangers, which made it difficult for her to be adopted. Tiki had a small circle of people friends who were greeted with tail wags and kisses but new people always made her retreat and observe from a distance. Tiki remained with Funds for Furry Friends for over 4 years.
In October 2016, two determined volunteers reached out to Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary in Cochrane, AB who specialize in dogs with the same elusive behaviours that Tiki exhibited. After emails and phone calls, the happy day came when Yamnuska called back and said, yes, we’ll take her! She would be able to make her way to them within a few short weeks. “Bonding dates” were arranged, so Tiki would be comfortable with her travelling companions, with lots of chicken, hot dogs and cheese! Then, late in the night on November 18th, 2016, those same volunteers packed up a cargo van with a warm bed and Tiki, and drove off into the night for a 12-hour drive.
Tiki was led into her new enclosure on the sanctuary, and with one last farewell, she was released to explore her new surroundings. She trotted off, with her tail held high, sniffing and pouncing in the grass, running along the fence-line with wolfdogs and exploring every tree, blade of grass and new toys! The next day, Tiki was introduced to her new packmate, a confident young wolfdog named Faelin, and were instant friends. The staff of Yamnuska were excited to begin confidence training with Tiki and build up her trust in them. We have had some wonderful updates on Tiki and she is doing wonderfully!
The photos you see were taken by two amazing volunteer photographers. Mandy Wark, based in Brandon, MB, has been a volunteer photographer with Funds for Furry Friends for years, and had photographed Tiki in the past. Her photos were of one of the “bonding dates” just a few short days before Tiki’s departure. The other photos are from Cochrane, AB based photographer Tim Hall who came out to photograph Tiki in her new home at Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary. Thank you both so very much for the wonderful gift you have given the rescue, a wonderful moment in time captured so beautifully and will be cherished forever.
We would also like to thank everyone who has held a spot in their heart for Tiki, and cheered her new adventure along the way! To the staff, past and present, at Brandon Boarding Kennel for taking such good care of our Tiki, to Enterprise Rent-a-Car in Brandon, MB for their generous discount for the cargo van, to everyone who forwarded donations towards the cost of travel expenses, and most of all, to everyone at Yamnuska who greeted Tiki with open arms and open hearts.
