Namaste (Black Lab)
Description Last Updated: March 9th, 2010
Those who ask what difference does it make saving just one have not witnessed the joy of the one who is saved!

Black Lab - Spayed Female - 6 years old (Born in 2003)
Height: 20-21" | Weight: 65lbs

Namaste is one of the sweetest dogs to ever pass through the doors of our rescue. This simply striking black beauty arrived in rescue in October 2009, and had a very rough life before rescue. Her name, Namaste (pronounced Na-ma-stay) is a yoga greeting. The name suits this gentle girl perfectly, as she is very sweet and loving. Namaste bows gracefully to her humans, showing them the utmost respect. People are her favorite - this gentle girl adores people and is simply amazing with children, always extending them a little extra patience. Namaste has wonderful manners in the house, and is very respectful and polite. She is completely housebroken and can be trusted loose in the house. She does not like to be confined and does best when she is not confined. Namaste is a very special girl - she wins the heart of everyone who meets her! Not only is this big girl outstanding with people, she is just as sweet with the animals she meets. Namaste is very patient and loving - she is excellent with both cats and other dogs. True to her breed, Namaste loves food and her foster mom has found the dog food is best kept up and out of the way. Namaste bonds very closely with her people and would prefer a home where she isn't alone a lot. She is a loving dog who just soaks up attention! Namaste is velcro dog - a complete shadow to her foster mom everywhere she goes. She is a loving companion, and she is a wonderfully laid back dog. Namaste would make a loving addition to any family! (Indoor Home Only!)

29/10/2009 UPDATE: Observing Namaste further, we began to notice she was lifting her leg up and not walking on it much. We requested x-rays of her leg when she was in for her spay on October 29th and received very sad news about the condition of her front leg. It appears that Namaste's leg was fractured, and because her former owners did not seek medical attention - the bone healed on it's own, and a fair bit of shifting has taken place. The x-rays revealed very twisted bones in Namaste's front leg, and a very deformed "ankle" joint. Osteoarthritis is already apparent in this leg and while she really doesn't complain, she has probably gotten used to the pain and discomfort. After having her x-rays assessed, we have been recommended an orthopedic surgery which will repair this joint, but will will leave Namaste's front ankle immobile on this leg. (Note that she will have full mobility at the elbow.) Her leg may need to be re-broken to be repaired, and it will take a little time for Namaste to heal up after her surgery. The vet clinic believes this surgery will also address the degenerative arthritis. While Namaste has lived as an outside dog most of her life, we believe that the cold weather will be hard on her joints and we would like to find Namaste an indoor home, where she will have plenty of opportunity to play outside. At this moment she is temporarily unavailable for adoption, and is booked for surgery on November 12th, 2009. We will update the website with more information following her surgery. We do not yet have a final cost for this surgery, but we were given a ballpark of $2500. Any donations that can assist with these costs would greatly assist in our venture to fix this problem which should have received veterinary attention a long time ago.

13/11/2009 UPDATE:Namaste is doing well so far! Namaste has had an ostectamy. Basically, a chunk of bone was removed from the ulna and the radius, and plates were placed on both bones. This did involve re-breaking the leg and then remodeling of the bones. The good news is, although there is some evidence of arthritis in the leg, the vets decided not to fuse the joint – and when healed, Namaste will have full mobility in all of the joints in her leg! Because of the prolonged time Namaste spent walking on her leg sideways, she will have a slight 10-15 degree tilt in her leg that won't be corrected with the surgery. The major bowing has been fixed and a little slight tilt is worlds from where Namaste was when she first arrived! She will wear a splint for 2 weeks, and it will take 6-8 weeks for the leg to fully heal. Namaste is on pain medication and under doctor's orders to try and give that leg some rest! This gentle girl is so laid back and easy-going to begin with - so far, it hasn't been a problem!

08/02/2010 UPDATE: Namaste's leg has healed up from her surgery and she's getting around wonderfully. The surgery did not, however, address the angle her front paw sits at, and Namaste's paw still turns outwards (although significantly less than it did previously.) Her paw still seems to be slightly uncomfortable for her - but

27/11/2010 UPDATE: The cast is off and Namaste is healing up! She has a large seam down the side of her leg that is going to take some time to heal - and unfortunately has to wear a very big e-collar (cone) to keep her from licking at her scar as it heals. Namaste has been great about the whole ordeal, and this surgery will significantly improve things for Namaste in the future!

08/02/2010 UPDATE: Namaste's all healed up and she is a much happier girl now that her leg has healed. She bonds really well with people, and is quite a velcro dog. Namaste does not like to be confined and is best loose in the house (without barriers like babygates or dividers.) Namaste really enjoys the company of another dog, and we have found she does best with a companion to spend the day with. I think if Namaste had her way, it would be a human companion - but she does wonderfully with a canine companion. This sweet girl would be happiest in a home where someone is around a lot, and she would not be an ideal pet for someone that works long hours. Namaste is one of the sweetest dogs you'll ever meet, and she is looking for a very special forever family.
