Murphy came into rescue after spending over a week in the pound hoping his owners would remember him. This sweet old fella is one of the happiest dogs we've ever met! Murphy loves everyone and he has a wonderful temperment. Murphy went in for a vet check recently and he is in pretty good shape for an old fella. His teeth are in good shape for his age and his joints are doing great. Time has not bee kind to his eyes though - Murphy has very bad cateracts and he is nearly blind. While it does means he needs encouragement navigating in new places, once he figures his way around he does pretty well! He has proven he can learn to use a doggie door, and Murphy gets around pretty well! He does seem to have more difficulty in the dark. To compensate for his sight, we have found verbal cues and acknowledgement go a long way with Murphy! Murphy is crate trained and does extremely well in a crate. It almost appears that in a former life, he was crated indoors and let loose outdoors, as he seems a little uncertain about being loose in the house - and actually seems most comforted by the kennel. Murphy is affectionate and sweet, but he does have a little bit of a settle-in period. He can be restless when he is trying to figure out a new place, but once he settles, he is happy to enjoy the company of humans. Murphy is fine with both cats and dogs - he doesn't see them, but gives them a sniff of acknowledgement and moves along. He LOVES to be on leash and while he's not sure where he is going - he's always happy to go "somewhere" with his people. He tends to go in circles if you don't move forward when walking - trying to determine which way he should be going. Murphy loves to be outside and enjoys any opportunity to run in the yard. While Murphy won't run away off leash, a yard or enclosure is safer for him. Murphy also has a heart murmur. When he went in for his neutering it was noticed, but the vets felt it was not severe enough to prevent him from getting neutered and going under anesthetic. Murphy has surprised everyone with his happy, spunky nature - he will make someone a wonderful companion! (Indoor Home Only.)
