Finnegan's Bark Fund...

Finnegan was a dog rescued by Funds for Furry Friends at great effort. He was one truly wonderful little dogs we had rescued ? quiet, gentle, sweet natured and easy going. Funds for Furry Friends makes a guarantee that ANY dog adopted from our rescue can come back into rescue if there is any reason the dog is not wanted or working in an adoptive home. (This is outlined in several places on our contract and we do require that our dogs are returned to us, even if the reason is medical or behavioural because we have resources to deal with these things and like to have our own assessments done before any dog from our rescue faces euthanasia.) Finnegan's adoptive home, despite our contract, had him euthanized. Vet clinics were contacted and it was discovered that this little man never did see a vet for any reason ? except to be euthanized. He was never examined by a vet and the adoptive home felt their personal assessment was good enough judgment to cut his life short at 5 years of age. Finngean was not even past his trial period and died after 10 days with his adopter. This news devastated all those who were lucky enough to know this little boy. Fortunately, this is the ONLY case where a dog has NOT been returned to our rescue and faced such a fate. We want our dogs back if they are unwanted and we will pay to board them at a kennel, should they need to buy time before a foster home is available. Funds for Furry Friends puts out thousands of dollars in boarding costs because of animals need to be taken from the pound or from a vet clinic where they have arrived to be euthanized. There are cases where dogs or cats need to be returned without notice as well. While we currently have 56 foster homes, we simply do not have enough. Finnegan's BARK Fund, or Finnegan's "Boarding Animal Rescue Keepers" Fund is designed to help the rescue with costs of boarding dogs waiting for foster homes and preventing unnecessary death. These animals, after all, are all "keepers" don't you think? Boarding costs at our discounted rate are $65 per week, and a month costs us $260. Any donations to Finnegan's BARK Fund will go in memory of Finnegan, to help us expand our intake beyond what foster homes we have available and to guarantee a place where any animals returned to rescue can go.

UPDATE: VALENTINES DAY 2007- JUSTICE FOR FINNEGAN

Back in November 2006, Finnegan, a 5-year old lemon beagle, was adopted from Funds for Furry Friends by a woman wanting a special friend.  Ten days after adoption, the owner had him euthanized. This was contrary to our signed contract, where it specifically stated that for any reason that the owner didn't want the adopted dog, the dog MUST be returned into Rescue.  The adoptive owner was contacted and no reason was provided for euthanasia.

In December 2006, Funds for Furry Friends filed a lawsuit against the adoptive owner for breach of contract through the Court of Queens Bench in Brandon, Manitoba.

On February 14, 2007, Valentines Day, The Court of Queens Bench ruled in favour of Funds for Furry Friends.  The Judge specifically identified our legal contract as clear.  The defendant had a judgment issued against her and will be served with a Judgment of Decision in the next 2-3 weeks.  This becomes a judgment registered with the credit bureaus across Canada.  The judgment is good for 10 years.
