Those who ask what difference does it make saving just one have not witnessed the joy of the one who is saved!

Duck Tolling Retriever X - Neutered Male - 4 years old (Born in 2006)
Height: 19-20" | Weight: *Should be 55lbs* (overweight)

Cassanova really is a dog that will steal your heart! This beautiful boy is a very charming fellow has a wonderful disposition and a very social and friendly demeanor. He was rescued back in 2008 and would really love to find his own forever family. Cassanova adores people of all ages and is fantastic with kids. He is extremely gentle and tolerant with the children, and Cassanova also has a lot of patience with other dogs. He gets along with very other dog he meets, greeting even dogs that lunge and bark at him with a proper calm demeanor. Cassanova has a calming effect on most dogs and always makes sure the other dogs in his foster home keep the peace! He is very laid back and easy-going. Cassanova has amazing recall off leash, and comes promptly when he he called. He is equally easy to walk on leash and has excellent manners. Cassanova is housebroken, well mannered inside and respectful of everyone in his foster home. Well, almost everyone... He is a little bit of an annoyance to cats. He gets curious about cats and will poke them with his nose when he sees them - not really taking the hint when they swat and hiss at him. He is harmless and has been fostered with two cats (and babysat by several individuals with cats) during his time in rescue, and really isn't much of a bother. Cassanova is a dog that wants to hang out and just be with someone. He loves company - and it doesn't matter if it's another person or canine. He's just a social guy who is happiest to have someone around. As a matter of fact, he must accompany every dog living or visiting his foster home when they go outside (just so they don't have to be alone!) Cassanova is a very social guy. He is not always lazy and laid back - Cassanova will play if a human or other dog engages him. He will chase a ball or gently wrestle with another dog. He is listed on his vet work as a duck tolling retriever, coat is lighter and a little shorter than a tranditional duck toller – he is a dead on match for the personality!  Cassanova is outgoing and intelligent. He really enjoys being with people and he is easy to have around, with his laid back nature.

So, why is Cassanova still in rescue? Unfortunately, this fellow has had some complications which have been diagnosed since his arrival in rescue. We have learned Cassanova has hypothyroidism and cushings disease. These conditions are managed with medications - the medication for his thyroid (thyro tabs) is very inexpensive - only about $10/month - and his cushings medication (mitotaine) costs $80/month. These are the costs of the medication in Brandon Vet Clinics. So, he does come with an ongoing medical expense. Cassanova is well managed on his medication and is doing extremely well. His only downfall has been the weight gain which accompanied his diagnosis - which began to put a strain on his joints and was interfering with his ability to exercise and play. After attempting several different diet and exercise programs, we introduced a weight loss medication called selentrol a few months back. Cassanova has lost a lot of weight with this medication and it will not need to be continued long term. Once he has lost the extra pounds, he will be able to go back to a proper diet and exercise routine. The weight loss has really made a huge difference for Cassanova and he has shown a much more happy and playful side now that he has a little more energy :)

Cassanova is looking for someone very special - someone who won't look past him because of his medical issues... Because this beautiful boy really is a dog and a half! Cassanova has the most outstanding personality and he has a lot of love to give. Cassanova is well managed on his medication, and is a very happy and loving boy. He would truly be a gift to any family willing to make room!
